It's the one Wedding variable that no-one has control over, and is therefore always a worry in the lead up to any wedding. What if there's bad weather?
What does the Photographer say?
I always try to reassure couples that it has very little impact on their day - It just makes my day harder.
Typically the photography is one of the few parts of the day that is outside, so bad weather shouldn't affect their enjoyment of their day.
In fact, sometimes it can add to the memories as in this photo of a Bride arriving at her wedding last year (being sheltered by umbrellas I always carry with me).
I visit all the venues before the Wedding Day, so I know where the best locations are for photos whatever the weather. This includes identifying large indoor spaces, shady outdoor areas, and the nicest places for photos of the couple by themselves.
As a Wedding Photographer, a bright sunny day can be nearly as bad as a rainy day, as people squint, some wear sunglasses and it makes lighting more challenging.
What do superstitions say?
I thought it might be interesting so do a search on superstitions, and managed to find the following, often contradictory advice.
- rain on your wedding day means you will have many children
- if it rains on your wedding day, you'll shed many tears during your married life
- rain on the wedding day represents the bride's old boyfriends crying after her
- if it rains on your wedding day and everything is on schedule or close to it, the marriage will be a success because it shows they you work together under pressure and face obstacles
- if it rains on your wedding day your marriage with be blessed with fertility and good fortune. This is based on rain being needed to replenish reservoirs and sustain crops
Whatever the possible weather on your Wedding Day, it's not worth worrying about. Just remember what's important:
You are marrying the love of you life in front of supportive family and friends. The day should be a celebration whatever the weather.
